Exploring age
Go to www.helptheaged.org.uk and www.ageconcern.org.uk, and then search the sites to find answers to the following questions. The ‘campaigns and issues’ section of both websites is a helpful point to start.
- Identify three aspects of the identity usually given to older people that older people object to.
- Find three examples of things that might explain and illustrate why old age is often seen as a stigmatized identity.
- Find three examples of things that illustrate ageism in everyday life.
- Drawing on the material on the websites, suggest three social policies that might be carried out to reduce the stigma attached to the identity of older people.
