Student Resources - Chapter 3
Internet Activity 3.1
Using Data
Go to www.statistics.gov.uk and research some of the latest available data on the state of the family in contemporary Britain. ‘Focus on Families’ is a good place to start but be prepared to follow links to gain more information.
1. Collect information, both statistics and any analysis provided in the accompanying text, on:
- trends in the number and ages of cohabiting couples
- trends in the number of marriages and ages of married couples
- trends in the number of step families
- trends in the number of divorces
- trends in the number of lone-parent families
- trends in births outside marriage and the ages of those concerned
2. Using the evidence you have collected, write a report of about 250 words on ‘The future of the family in contemporary Britain’. Be sure any conclusions you reach or predictions you make are backed up with reference to the evidence you have collected.

Worksheets
Click here to download the Worksheet on Families and Households. You’ll find these in two formats: as an ordinary handout, and also as a version with spaces left for your answers. You can type the answers directly into the worksheet and print it off to hand in, if your teacher is happy for you to complete the worksheet electronically.
