Postscript to Models of Democracy
The essay below was written after the first edition Models of Democracy and forms a postscript to the book. It still constitutes a valuable development of the argument in Models and hence is included in this website. The essay begins by contrasting key historical models of democracy and then examines the meaning and relevance of these models in the light of the intersection of political communities with each other; in the light, that is, of complex interconnections between states and societies. The essay seeks to place new items on the agenda of democratic theory by presenting the case that democratic thought must rise to the challenge of globalization and explore a cosmopolitan basis for political life.

“Models is the kind of established classic which both demands and merits revision every decade or so. The new chapter on deliberative democracy for the third edition, concise and perceptive as always, maintains Held's reputation at the forefront of democratic thinkers today.”
